Multi-Wave Ultraviolet Fluorescent Mineral Specimen from Japan!
Locality: Lake Shikaribetsu, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan
Weighs: 35.1 grams
Measures Approximately: 8.8cm x 3.1cm x 1cm
Hokkaidoite, or "Hokkaido Stone", is an organic mineral, found in Shikaribetsu Lake, Shikaoi (Shikaoi-Chō), Kato District, Tokachi Subprefecture, Hokkaidō Prefecture, Japan, and just recently discovered in 2023! According to Mindat, it is most likely a Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH), possibly anthanthrene or benzo[ghi]perylene, but there are at least 20 more possibilities. It is the first polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mineral discovered in Japan. It was approved & registered for naming by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) in January, and then presented at the Japan Geoscience Union Meeting later in 2023. The areas where Hokkaido Stone is found are protected and not open to the public. Some specimens are gradually making their way into the market over time, but are still quite limited in supply.
All Fluorescent Pics Show the Longwave UV Response, Taken Using a Convoy C8+ 365nm LED Flashlight. The SW & MW Responses are Nearly Identical, but Slightly Less Bright.
Response Will Vary Based on Strength of Light Used, but Any Decent Light of the Proper Wavelength(s) Will Produce a Similar Response!
Please Note: Fluorescent Minerals Require a Shortwave (SW) and/or Longwave (LW) Ultraviolet (UV) Light for the Fluorescent Response Shown in the Pictures! a Black Light is NOT a SW/LW Light, although Some Rocks May also Show Under Black Light as well!
